“A stunning discovery”: Peñico, a 3,500-year-old new Peruvian city

A team of archaeologists announced on Thursday, July 3, the discovery of an ancient city in northern Peru, believed to date back to 1500 BC. This major discovery “has revolutionized our understanding of the ancient civilizations of the Americas.”

Peru, which "is home to many of the most important archaeological discoveries in the Americas," as The Telegraph writes , continues to amaze scientists. On Thursday, July 3, a team of archaeologists, led by Peruvian Ruth Shady, announced the discovery of a city more than 3,500 years old in the north of the country, named Peñico.

“A stunning discovery,” enthuses Infobae , “which has revolutionized our understanding of the ancient civilizations of the Americas.” Indeed, the site is located less than 30 kilometers from the sacred city of Caral, whose foundation dates back 5,000 years and is known as the oldest trace of civilization in the Americas. Researchers believe that Peñico emerged following the fall of Caral around 1800 BC, which may have been caused by the droughts and floods that affected the region at that time.

The city is also built "on elevated and protected land," at an altitude of 600 meters. This is an essential choice "to guarantee the durability of the structures" and which "testifies to the human capacity to adapt and thrive in a difficult geographical environment," the Argentinian online media continues.
